Apple pie.

Mint chip cookie.
Coconut rum fudge.
Tarmack.

Between our samples and our final selections, the boy and I tasted all of the above non-dairy ice creams.  And, like Uma in Pulp Fiction... I SAY GODDAMN!!!!

As you may well know, I am an ice cream fanatic. Case in point, I hiked all the way over to Maggie Mudd after work (I do not live even remotely close to the Bernal Heights location) for no particular occasion; rather, I just wanted to try their vegan ice cream. And lets just say that I was not disappointed. No, without a doubt Maggie Mudd knows how to make dairyless ice cream taste heavenly. Once you enter this small unassuming shop, you'll see a huge ice cream sculpture and a counter behind which you can read todays flavors on an overhead board. While the choices were not as vast as I had expected, trying two- one each of a soy and coconut based concoction- there was no need for more varieties. While the mint with cookies (soy based) was tasty, what really struck my fancy was the coconut based apple pie. This blissful treat is composed of apple flavored ice cream with chunks of cinnamon-y cooked apples and chunks of graham cracker crust.  My dessert came in a huge waffle cone, and the portions were large enough to keep me satisfied for nearly the entire walk back to catch the J and San Jose and Randall. My only complaint here is that the service was a bit on the slow side, not to mention there were hoards of toddlers running wild in the store. That being said, I'll put up with glacially paced service and hyperactive kids any day, as long as I can inhale the deliciousness that is Maggie Mudd's ice cream.

After our dinner and with the nice sunny weather still hanging around, we took a drive to the quiet Bernal Heights area and check another one of my targeted businesses.  I also like to say the name with the deep southern accent:

"MAGGIE MUDD!"

This small ice cream place makes their own blend of ice cream with the freshest organic ingredients of soy and lacto-vegetarian. A very unique ice cream place like this one can fool any diehard ice cream-lovers. This vegan-delight parlor also services many of the popular vegetarian restaurants and businesses throughout the Bay Area.

With us being the only one there, we sampled a couple of the available flavors. I had a spoon sample of the Butter Pecan and the Bear Claw ice cream. Bear Claw is a chocolate ice cream with bits of vegan brownies and caramel sauce. Wife had the Rocky Road and the tropical Coconut Pineapple. All these samples are really good as well as tasty and might be our proposed and likely choice on our next visit.

Since our sweet taste-buds are now awake, I had a scoop of the Caramel Apple and she had the Lemon-Meringue Pie. For $3.60, the adult-size scoop is a pretty good-size scoop in a colorful small 5oz bowl. The Caramel Apple is a green colored ice cream with the taste and chunks of the apple and the swirl of the caramel sauce. Her Lemon-Meringue ice cream tasted like slice of Lemon Meringue pie from a bakery with the citrus taste of the lemon ice cream. Our treats were so good, man, "who are they trying to fool?" This frozen delight does not taste anything like vegan.

I used my Visa for this sweet purchase.

Every Wednesdays, kids get a scoop for $1.00. I'll definitely bring my ice cream-cadets on Wednesday and fetch some of those ice creams and hopefully give them some money to get their parents some of the tasty vegan ice cream. I'm not a kid no more, but I feel like one.

You already know I love Maggie Mudd but did you know you can have an "ice cream" birthday cake made too? OMG! I got one for my boyfriend's birthday. Soy ice cream birthday cake. Yes, my friends, it was awesome. You can also customize your cake how ever you want it. Tasty, tasty, tasty.

I know my boyfriend hadn't had an ice cream birthday cake in years (without taking the ice cream out) and I know he loved it! YUM!

Ice cream tasted good, sherbet nice and flavorful. But the place looks kind of dingy, sticky and cluttered, not what you want from an ice cream parlor.  You sort of don't want to see sticky floors, empty cardboard boxes, etc. lying around.

I only get to come about once or twice a year...so every visit is built up in my mind for months and months...normally, I hate doing that because you are always disappointed.

That is NEVER the case with Maggie Mudd's. There is no such thing as too much hype here. -Even when they make an errant order it is fantastic!

Maggie Mudd's is a complete meal, too...
I had my starch: waffle cone (Made fresh and will stay crisp through and through 5 scoops! Personal Testimony!)
Protein: nuts and soya-based flavours
Fruit: Whole chunks of apple in the Apple Pie changed my life forever.
Fats and sweets: Okay, that goes without saying...
Veg: um...the soya base again?

So, not quite complete...but it is alright, because the next day, you will just want to balance it out with a big healthy salad, anyway.

Up the Dubliner! Apple Pie! Black Sesame! Mint Cookie-something!

Oh, just anything!

(Psst: If you cannot hike, be prepared for patience in finding a spot for the car or take the shady-train to Bernal Heights. Best of luck...)

I thought 'vegan ice cream' was an oxymoron before I experienced Maggie Mudd.

If I'm dining in the Bernal Heights area, I'll always try to save room for a scoop or two of the "Dubliner". You'd be hard pressed to believe this is from a coconut milk base. Indeed, this deliciously rich Irish Cream flavor has no dairy in it.

If you want a really intense black licorice experience, go for Maggie's soy milk-based licorice flavor. Get a scoop of this with the orange sherbet, and you have a neat twist on the classic Tiger-Tail flavor.

Decent sized scoops here as well. I recommend a waffle cone so you don't have an 'Eddie Murphy moment' with a standard cone.

I love ice cream.  In fact, I love ice cream so much that the only words I mastered while traveling through Italy (and prior to being vegan) were "dui gusti."  Translation: 2 flavors.  Well, I learned that and "mi scusi," in case I needed to get the attention of the gelaterian (translation: super cute Italian person who scooped me dui gustis of deliciousness).  Many dui gustis later I returned to the US, and on attempt il numero tre, became vegan again.

Luckily, all is not lost for a vegan ice cream lover living in SF -thanks to places like Maggie Mudd.  As many have already noted, this is some pretty damn good vegan ice cream (or, for those who care, vegan frozen treat).  I particularly love the Tar Mak and Memphis Mudd pie.  What I love most about Maggie Mudds, though, is that I don't have to order my dui gusti of ice cream senza l'animale!

How could I be a vegan in San Francisco for over a decade and not EVER hear about this place?

Judging by the fact that it's in a dilapidated store front in a hard to get to by Muni spot - I'd say they probably don't have the funding for proper marketing.

I met a vegan bear in Chicago who told me to check this place out - I was disappointed by the chocolate ice cream which is the only flavour I really want to eat when I want ice cream - nothing stirred in, nothing on top - I'm not fancy like that. My friend got a fruity thing and it tasted better. I told myself I'd get a shake the next time I go there but it's been almost a year and I can't bring myself to make a special trip to the area - parking is too sparse and the wait for Muni makes it unworth the effort.

It seems like they've made more of an effort at wholesaling their ice cream cakes and I got one for my birthday. IT WAS GREAT. It was a 'Memphis Mudd Pie" - sort of a mocha thing pre-made and available at Rainbow Grocery.

I don't get it.

I guess I'm too used to having my ice cream experience as an experience where chocolate flavor has SOME chocolate in it.  Also there must be a demand for a lact-aid pill to accompany my ice cream or my experience isn't truly an ice cream experience.

I'm sure vegan ice cream is tasty for those of you who'll pick flavor that's not chocolate, but for those of us who loves chocolate, I don't know what to say.  Then again, I wasn't sure if it was their chocolate flavor was really different for my taste buds, or if the taste was altered due to the fact that the person who scooped my ice cream did not wash their hands following their smoke break.

I kind of doubt this place needs another review; but as a vegan - this place rules!  My non-vegan kids enjoy it quite a bit as well.  Generally the staff is friendly quick and super helpful (though I've been there on an off night it's by far the exception rather than the rule) there are different flavours to try every time I go in, and their shakes and specialty sundays and such are AMAZING!

I also really appreciate that they have coconut based vegan ice creams since I get plenty of soy things as it is.  Definitely more variety than coconut bliss, though they're not watching out for your health as much, Maggie Mudd's is an indulgence.  One friend claims that scoops down in hollywood is better, but I'm apt to disagree (for one, they don't run out of flavours by four in the afternoon on a hot day).

I find I really need to pace myself or get smaller items there these days though as z0mg a shake for example is maybe too much for two people even, but I guess they have a small I'll see how that goes next time I'm in the mood for a shake.

Oh yeah, and getting the vegan ice cream cakes for friends @ Rainbow has also been fantastic.

If you're looking for an ice cream place to fit all needs: vegan, nonvegan, home made, cakes, this place is IT!

I had heard good things about this place so I decided to drive there and check it out. I would advise not to bother. Any store-bought vegan ice-cream is superior in taste, quality, and freshness. The storefront is incredibly filthy and it smells disgusting when you stand to the left of the ice cream shelves. The floor hadn't been mopped forever. The place basically looked like homeless people use it as a shelter. The music was incredibly obnoxious, but it's so cold outside, you have to sit there and listen to this horrible music. I'm only 30 and couldn't bare it. The employees are unprofessionally dressed and apathetic. Overall, a pretty bad experience! You're better off going for vegan gelato anywhere else!

As a non-dairy eater and ice cream fiend, I was shocked when MaggieMudd "catered" a work event and I hadn't heard of them before. IMHO, coconut-based ice cream is better than milk-based.

I have yet to visit the store in Bernal but hope to pay my respects soon.

Love the vegan ice cream!! A great alternative to real ice cream!!  I will have to say on the day we went there our server was not that great. We had ordered already 3 pints of icecream, plus a shake and after we paid by credit card, which by the way, we were asked if we wanted to give a tip.... said ok.... so we are paid up... i was looking over the flavors and i wanted to try a taste, which was fine, my sister who i was with was interested in another flavor and asked for a sample, the server said no.. we thought she was kidding at first, but no my sis did not get a sample!!  i thought that was kinda rude, but hey cant knock their ice cream!!

The service was really friendly, and I love having  an ice-cream place in the neighborhood.  It's also really nice to see different kinds of ice cream  - they have regular, soy-based, and coconut-milk-based.

I had the blueberry soy-based ice cream.  The cone was a very generous double scoop, and the price was equally generous ($4.50). The texture was creamy, but the flavor was, unfortunately, pretty bland.  However, the flavor that *was* there was pure blueberry.  Perhaps they need to add some lemon juice and sugar, or perhaps I just need to adjust my tastes in order to appreciate a less-intense ice-cream flavor.

Either way, I know I will be back to try more.

I am basing this review on the Mudslinger's Freestyle Chocolate Coconut frozen desert I can get in the stores over on this side of the bay. It's coconut based (no dairy) and fu*king excellent!  I don't miss regular ice cream at all with this stuff, it's not a substitute, it's better.

I must visit the main base and try more.

OK, so being a vegan that looooves dairy products is kind of a bitch. I know there's vegan ice cream at Whole Foods, and don't get me wrong, that's delicious. But what about the trips to the cute little ice cream shops to grab a cone or a sundae? The loss of that option haunted me for years...until I found Maggie Mudd!!

The first time I came here I got probably the biggest sundae ever, cause I was so excited. Unfortunately, I had to pawn most of it off on my lovely (he was smart enough to get a smaller size).

Anyhow, everything I've had here is sooo good. I highly recommend the Orange ice cream with the cookies in it, I think it's a coconut based one. I also recommend the ice cream cakes, yum! Now that's something not easy to find vegan.

Oh Maggie Mudd's when will we be together again....?

Maggie Mudd will save the world from boring milk-centric ice cream.

For everyone who says MaggieMudd doesn't have chocolate: Please, do yourself a favor (or should I say "flavor"?) and try TarMack. Ingredients? Organic Cocoa, cocoa processed with alkali, organic unsweetened chocolate, chocolate cookie bits, peanut butter and other stuff.

Yes, I have had the odd cone that is a little on the bland side, but the flavors are adventurous. When you try to do something new, ingenious and creative like serve a menu that is generously informed by (but not entirely! there ARE delicious cream-based options) coconut-based and soy-based frozen yumminess, you're bound to have a couple duds.

I would also suggest trying the malts. You can make any of their flavors into a malted milkshake. For my lactose loving friends: give her a chance! If the first flavor isn't quite right, be bold! Try again!

For my vegan friends: make the trip to Bernal Heights and revel in the freedom from milk tyranny!

Delish vegan frozen yumminess. Tarmack for life yo. But I actually prefer buying it in cartons from Rainbow though.. I feel like every time I've gotten it from the place, it's kinda half frozen, runny. And I like my ice cream the way I like dicks. Hard.

Yum! I trekked all the way from the East Bay to come check out this place, and I'm glad I did. The coconut milk-based ice cream was fantastic -- I'm surprised more vegan ice creams aren't made from it (although at 55% my daily saturated fat, I'm sure my heart wasn't too happy with it).

My waffle cone was made to order, which was mega-delicious, but I'm glad there wasn't a long line because each cone took them about 5 minutes.Overall, great place worth the haul over the bay bridge.  I look forward to coming back to test some of their other funky flavors.

Random ice cream hunt on Monday night led me to MaggieMudd (actually right in my neighborhood!)  My second (no third) time and got a large cookies and cream regular ice cream.  Was simply amazing.  I love the home-made look of the ice cream bins and all the vegan offerings.  Really nice touch.  Would have given it five stars but the service was a little slow and "in crowd"...but that could also be because I was blinded by ice cream panic!

This is the kind of place you have to go when you are ready for a sugar buzz and have friends to share it with. The sundaes are massive. I thought I was going to have to dive in and swim in all the goodness.

HORRIBLE!!!!! Who ever was working the counter on 6/14/2008 around 4:00 should be fired! It was our first time there and a family of four was in front of us and didnt know what they wanted, the dead behind the eyes counter boy just stood there and when I asked about a certain flavor he was so rude about it. We waited for 15 minutes while he made sundaes at a snails pace then they ordered another one!!!!!!!!! Yea we left! He didnt even bother to say " ill be right with you " Oh and about 3 people walked in and walked out after they saw him in there. I WILL NEVER GO BACK.

Let me start out by saying I am allergic to dairy and soy, so it has been years since I have had ice cream.  That is, until my daughter and son-in-law located Maggie Mudd and their dairy-free, soy-free 'ice cream'.  It is made with a coconut milk base, and to say it is heavenly is an understatement!  It is a 'must go to' any time I am in San Francisco.  The only sad part about it is that I can't buy Maggie Mudd here in Wisconsin.

Ice Cream for the World

As has already been mentioned, the ice cream at this place is truly amazing - they have all of the good old standards in addition to a couple interesting flavors that are different every time i go. Another thing about them however that is truly incredible is that all of their cups and napkins are compostable and they have a little compost bin right in front of the shop. Now that is ice cream you don't have to feel guilty about!

This place is delicious! A good portion of  the vegan ice cream is also made from coconut milk if you don't want soy overload. It's the thickest and creamiest vegan ice cream I've ever tasted with an awesome variety of flavors.  I've also ordered their vegan ice cream cakes, yum! I will admit the counter service can be lacking-but I've never had a horrible experience, in fact I don't think I've ever had the same counter person twice, maybe they have high turnover?  Also I've never really had to wait in line, but I usually go there late, for an after dinner treat.  They have severely limited their indoor seating in recent years, so I wouldn't plan on finding a comfy place to sit and hang out anymore...

One scoop for a sundae?  C'mon now!  Let's be a little more generous with ice cream - especially yummy ice cream!

I loved the strawberry ice cream in my banana mambo sundae - as well as all the goodies.  I just felt a little robbed given the price and the usual sundae portions that I'm used to at other places.  For that reason, I'm not sure I would go back any time soon.

Still, a nice ending to a yummy dinner.

Wait .... ME?!  Mr. Anti-Ice Cream writing a review of an ICE CREAM place?  Well ......... yeah.

One chilly day recently, we were driving around Bernal Heights, looking for a place to go.  And if you try to LOOK for Maggie Mudd's you just might miss it.  It's rather small.

Anyway, my roommate wanted to get her kids some ice cream, so we went here.  One little boy with us, ONLY likes vanilla.  That's it.  Vanilla only.  But they ran out.  That's why I have to deduct one star.  That brought a 6 year old boy to tears!  Thankfully they have a low fat, sugar free option, which saved the day, but any ice cream place should never run out of vanilla!

Everybody had their own shake or sundae.  I opted for a mini waffle sundae, and it was still too big for me to finish, so I gave the remainder to the "human garbage disposal", aka roommates oldest son.

Many different kinds of ice cream are available, but you will see them change daily.  Some days you will see Moose Tracks, (which I had with my sundae), and the next it will mysteriously vanish.  That day, the selection was rather limited.

More sundae's and shakes are available than I can count.  They make their waffles fresh to order, which adds to the time it takes to make your bowl, but it's worth it.

For those lactose intolerant, or vegans, you can feel safe here.

So, go if you like, but don't get attached to any one kind, because they just might not have it next time.

I live right near Maggie's so I pass it all the time but Ive only been in their twice. The first time I tried several flavors and didn't like any of them. Now how is that possible?? I have no idea, I'm an ice cream fiend. The second time I ended up getting one that I though was pretty good, but not quite what I was expecting after all of the hype. The real downer was that it was super overpriced for what it was and the service was horrible. I want my ice cream scoopers to be friendly, these two were sullen, pouty and crabby. What gives?? I worked in an ice cream parlor/soda fountain when I was in high school and I freaking loved that job.
How stressful could it possibly be???
Jeez people get it together. I'd rather just grab a pint of B&J's and call it a day. I'm sure I will give it another try at some point but in the meantime theres Mitchell's, Bi-Rite and Bombay.

Cute as hell with VEGAN black sesame ice cream.  Just wish it wasn't out in the boondocks... this place could totally fly in a district like the Inner Sunset or around 16th and Valencia.

For those of you with soy aversions, they make non-dairy ice cream with coconut and other nut-milks.  Their Mississippi Mudd Pie made w/ coconut milk was REALLY good.

And for those of you who just can't quit dairy... there's some of that here too.

And, they make ice cream cakes.  Boo-yah!

Delectable vegan ice-cream cakes. Admittedly, I've only ordered one of them, a lychee-vanilla one for a birthday, and everyone in my family loved it. Not many places where you can get a variety of flavors for vegan cakes in the Bay Area, to my knowledge, not to mention ice-cream cakes. Interestingly, I'm writing this review a year after I actually ordered this cake for my parents' birthdays last year (in mid-June), so I guess my procrastination ways from school days have not completely evaded me (sigh). To my credit, though, I didn't actually join yelp until late last year. Still, the cake was memorable enough, and delectable enough, for me to write this review on a very positive note. A bit on the pricy side at $30 for the 6" diameter cake, I suppose, but then the cake was really tall and excellent so definitely worth it. Now that I know some people living in the city, maybe we'll go there again. I'm always open to places that cater to a variety of diets, especially for vegetarians , diabetics, and those with food allergies.

Coconut-based ice cream is delicious!!  Why don't more ice cream shops offer stuff like this?  And they have cute little goofy seating options inside (albeit limited seating). We so need one of these in the north bay.  I think it would get amazing business.

Location, location, location!  That is my only reason for the missing star on the rating.  LIke others said- I almost missed this place because its so tucked away in a potholed hillside.

During my vegan days, ice cream always proved to be a challenge. Once the thoughts of cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, or the holy combo of chocolate and peanut butter started swirling through my mind like so much chocolate marbling, Tofutti Cuties just didn't cut it. Thank goodness MaggieMudd realizes that vegans love chocolate too! The flavors scooped out at this Bernal Heights sweet spot taste better than their dairy counterparts. Seriously. Really. No joke.

It's painted piss yellow and is about the size of my walk-in closet; but as it turns out, Maggie Mudd has some of the best ice cream--and definitely the best vegan ice cream--I've ever eaten.

The non-dairy ice creams are creamy and refreshing with a very smooth texture. They're soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk, or hazelnut milk based, and freshly made in the store. They come in lots of unique flavors like Black Tea, Coconut Lychee, and Black Sesame... and they're all fucking great.

The service is also outstanding. The girl was really nice and helpful, and she let me buy one of the prepackaged pints intended for retailers. She also told me that she liked my nail polish, which, of course, earns her ten stars, irrespective of the ice cream.

I didn't want to give that fifth star...but the vegan banana split made me do it. It was fantastic! The customer service needs a lot of work though. It's funny, they're actually hiring and I almost thought about applying. A happy vegan worker who makes yummy vegans sundaes = happy vegan customers! Anyway, next time it's going to be the brownie sundae and quite frankly my vegan boy and I can't wait!
