Neighborhood: 78704 (South Austin)Kat Castillo is at Topaz now ! Dream come true because I live less than a mile away and she's absolutely magical! My profile pic is the latest of her work on my hair (don't tell anyone but the red is extensions!). I wanted A-symmetrical red accents to my uber-blond hair and she did it deliciously. She is willing to go as far-out as you want or reel it in if you want to play it safe. I had an absolute blast in her chair... can't wait for my next visit!

Kinda weird that all of the bad reviews I've seen here before are now gone. Donna cut my hair. I wasn't horrible like some of the missing reviews experienced but it wasn't a good cut at all. She did tell me before we got started that she was having a bad week.
The salon was nice.
I went here on the recommendation of trusted Yelpers, looking for:
A) a relaxing afternoon devoted to beaitufying my hair and nails after working 14 hour days with a group of 30 kiddos from China
B) possibly finding that one person to complete me, the one person that has been absent from my life for over 10 years, the special someone I have been seaching for high and low, from I-35 to Mo-Pac to 183. A hairdresser. MY hairdresser.
Topaz delivered on both fronts.
I scheduled an appointment first with Jennifer, the nail technician. Once in the massage chair I settled in for an hour of pure, blissed-out happiness. Jennifer's hands were so soft they were like rose petals carressing my damaged feet. The massage was so perfect and lasted so long that I was nodding off by the end of it. Jennifer probably did not see the experience as romantically as I did, given the state that my toes were in when I came to her. They were rough, but she turned them into glittering pink diamonds. I might also add that she charges $55 for this miracle, but it's a miracle I will find a way to afford every year or so.
On to my hair appointment, where I met Donna. I did the worst possible thing to her, which was to say, "I don't really know what I want." She asked the right questions, though, and we decided on a funkier version of what I already had, a little bit shorter and with bangs. Shampooing was nice...the chairs are not too comfortable but they use Bumble and Bumble products that smell delicious. We talked pretty much the whole time she cut, a very enjoyable conversation, and about 30 minutes later I was looking at a super-sexy awesome and sparkling new me. I love Donna. Her prices are very reasonable and she gave me the best haircut I've had so far in my long search, which is now, officially, over.
Yay!

I totally second the awesome review of Kat! I just went from a blonde to a strawberry blonde and she custom mixed me a perfect color for my skin tone - I swear it looks like I might be a natural red head!!! And I also had the dreaded short hair grow-out mushroom head, so she magically thinned it out into this super hip cut without taking the length off since I told her I was trying to grow it out. She nailed exactly what I wanted as well as making her own suggestions to make it even edgier. We've already made plans for phase 2 at my next appointment.... this lady is a dream talent and I really can't recommend her enough!
I had seen this salon plenty of times while driving down Lamar but being a NW Austinite I never had a reason to try it. Well...I started working downtown (and will soon live down here as well) and decided to switch all my beauty rituals to a more central locale. Soo..I got on here read the reviews and saw that Donna was highly recommended. Figured what the heck my hair is so dry and damaged right now not much any one can do to make it worse. So I called and was able to get an appt with her pretty quickly.
I had been sporting long hair the last few years but like I said it was pretty bad. I had been slowly trimming it shorter but no one was quite giving me the cut I wanted. (Even with pics) Luck for me Donna has similar hair to mine as far as texture, etc. So she knew my woes and while she didn't have any magically powers to correct my damage instantly she got it looking good again. I just went back for my 2nd visit and we are slowly getting it back to healthy while keeping it cute and trendy. Hopefully 1 or 2 more trims and I'll be back on the road to the gorgeous hair I used to have. Now if I can just stay away from the hair dye!!
Everyone in there seems very pleasant. Donna is not only good with my hair but really fun to chat with and I don't feel like I am stuck sitting in a chair for an hour with nothing to say. The rates are great too. Their website doesn't say anything about prices so I was a tad worry when I went in but $40 for a good cut is a more than reasonable price.

I think like a lot of people, I was wary of this salon because of it's location in a strip mall.. but I was pleasantly surprised.
It's non-intimidating and everyone seemed pretty friendly AND I got a damn good haircut by Lorraine. She listened to me really well and did her job. I totally felt like she was paying attention to details and not just zipping through the haircut.
Awesome. Totally going back to get my color done, too.

YES! 40 dollars! For a good haircut!
Topaz salon is a cute little place in a strip mall on Lamar located next to senic Slick Willie's Pool Hall and quaint Starbucks. Don't let the strip mall fool you though - this place is fantabulous.
I was in need of a hair cut, and so I turned to Yelp in search of a hairstylist. I saw Donna (yay Donna!) and was very pleased. My parents normally foot the bill for 80 + dollar haircuts from Ray at Wildflower Salon and Spa - I love Ray. Just not his price tag.
The key to a good haircut is communication. Most people don't like a haircut because they didn't give the stylist a good idea of what they wanted. When I sat down in Donna's chair we discussed what my goals were, what I didn't like about my hair, that kind of thing. Donna even pointed out my problem areas (the back of my bob was too heavy and flipped out).
Donna gave me a chic, sleek bob, and she made my loads of hair feel light and lovely. My only complaint is that my bangs came out a wee bit too short for my tastes - but I did tell her to cut a half of an inch to an inch off. My bad. I'll convey my fear of overly short bangs to her next time.
So looking for a good haircut at a good price? Check out Topaz Salon, and talk to Donna. She aims to please, and she has a great personality. As my childhood love, Ahnold, has stated so , many times ... I'll be bahck.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Tanya Steele my new Stylist. I've never had a stylist that I ever returned to but I finally found one!! I am so happy with how my hair turned out its unbelievable! I cant believe it's really me. I feel so pretty.
Usually , my hair always looks the same - and you can only see the color in the sun or light - but not this time. My husband noticed right away and so did my daughter.
Tanya did a double chemical process and a cut - I visited w/ her for over 2 hours - and the conversation was never boring. I had a great time and will be sending all my friends and family to visit Tanya soon!
Oh - and her prices are reasonable . Great service , great cut - What more can you ask for? Thanks Tanya Steele!!!

So like a number of the reviews for Topaz Salon I was a long haired girl who dreamed of being a short haired girl. I have always had long hair and could not see myself with short hair but after many summers of having my hair in ballcaps, ponytails, and clips more often than not, I decided to go short. I was between stylists so I came to Yelp to find a good salon and hairdstylist who could give me that perfect cut.
Well, I found Donna at Topaz Salon and she is awesome! I read a number of reviews of girls who went long to short and immediately called the salon. Donna had an opening for the next day so even though I was nervous about the change (I figued I could always chicken out and just get a trim) I made the appt.
The salon itself is very comfortable and it was very quiet despite the hustle and bustle of Lamar just outside the door. All the stylists there looked like they knew what they were doing and you could tell they enjoyed their job. I have been to many salons where there was a huffy vibe but not at Topaz!
Donna sat me down and listened to my reasons for wanting to go short and also my hesitation because I was not sure if I was a girl who could go short and still look girly and cute. I told Donna that she had free reign on my hair and while I did not want to have my hair shaved, she could take my hair as short as she wanted. She worked in stages and all the while made sure I was comfortable with what she was doing.....
Well, to make a long story (and hair) short, I am thrilled with my new cut and have gotten nothing but compliments from it. I am singing the praises of both Topaz Salon and Donna. I have no doubt that all the other stylists there are just as gifted as her and will definately be going back again and again.

I am an Indian (asian) and I have always had long, long hair. At the beginning of this summer, I was finally convinced to take off those inches and try a new look. And then began the search for a hair stylist in whom I could place my complete trust. I had previously been going to JR Salon on Burnet but I could never trust the stylist enough to try anything drastic. Although the ambience and the service over there is five star, I didn't find it high on skill.
Anyway, I was sure that I didn't want to go to JR this time. So I started asking friends and looked around on yelp. Donna at Topaz Salon seemed awesome from the reviews. I decided to give it a shot with her.
I needed the appointment soon, before an impending out of town trip and I got one that totally fit in with my plans. I reached a little early for my appointment. Donna had just finished with her client. After a short break, she was ready to work on my hair.
We discussed what I wanted - I showed her my drawings (!!) and some pictures and told her that I was ready to take 4-5 inches off. She listened to everything that I had to say and gave her inputs too. I would lose a lot of length, get bangs in front, and layers at the back which would also give my hair more body.
After a quick hair wash, we were back at her station. She snipped away, while we talked about my hair and other stuff. Once she finished blow drying my hair, I was really surprised to see the difference it made to my face. She had given her own tiny twist to the style. It was awesome - I walked out really happy.
But the best was yet to come.
It has now been 3 weeks since my cut and I fall in love with my *new* hair everytime I wash it. It has more body, and much more style. It is also really simple to try different looks. I am not the one to spend too much time on my hair - I mostly let it air dry and use some de-frizz serum. I had wanted a low maintenance cut and that is exactly what Donna gave me. She admitted that she was a little scared about cutting Indian hair but she has done a fabulous job on mine at least. I have been recommending her to all my friends!
Topaz salon is not too sleek or well done but its functional. The hair wash was not the best either. But who cares about any of that as long as I got a great cut! Donna never pushed any of the products on me - NOT EVEN ONCE. She charged $40 which I am totally ok with. I will definitely be going to her for my next cut AND a little color... :)

Every two weeks I get a great haircut from Tasha. She's always happy and upbeat, and I look forward to seeing her every time.
The salon is nice and comfortable, and not too "girly."
If you want the best stylist in the business you need to make your next appointment with Tasha B at Topaz Saloon! She has been cutting my hair for years. Tasha is a great stylist and she is always on top of her appointments. You never wait for her very long. If she is running behind, it's because some client staggered in late! More than likely she is always ahead of schedule. I like that!
I went to see Donna and I'm glad I did. She worked with how my hair is naturally and gave me a more versatile haircut than I've had in a long time. The best part, I didn't have a grumpy adjustment period afterwards because the cut actually worked with my hair, not against it. I got lots of compliments too.
Donna gave me awesome highlights, she really took her time to make sure they were perfect. Something I really appreciated since I really didn't have the $$ for highlights anyways. Worth it.
Conversation was good too. I felt like I could actually relate. We talked about stuff like Yelp, movies, science, etc. Engaging conversation rather than the usual tell your mini life story
This review is so overdue it's time for me to go back!.

I trust these people. Yes, hair grows but not that quickly. At Topaz I don't want it to grow quickly because it looks so damn cute! I've been to Donna and some other girl (I've only been to Topaz twice). I read about it on Yelp and Donna and random girl were both good. I almost trust them too much....go here to look stylish and have that men on the street give you an automatic second and third look.

So apparently Donna has the hearts of many Yelpers. Well, I wasn't able to get Donna for a last minute appointment so I made do with a nice girl named Heather G. To be honest I didn't really care who I got for my first time appointment at Topaz because I was almost certain any of the stylists there would be great and I was in desperate need of a new style and trim.
My first visit inside this place felt very warm and welcome. I was greeted with a smile and asked if I wanted anything to drink. Topaz is bright, funky and artsy inside (in other words very Austin). There was great music playing at a suitable volume while I could still hear lots of enjoyable chatter throughout the shop. The clientele was a good mixture of folks, from older upscale housewives to young hip bookworms (both men and women) and then plain looking peeps like myself :-)
I couldn't be luckier with the stylist I was lined up with. Heather G. was a quirky and fun girl to talk to. Of course with any first time visit to a hair dresser things can become awkward and maybe a little quiet at times, but that should be expected because it's an introduction to (hopefully) a longtime commitment between client and stylist. She listened to me and knew exactly what kind of cut I was going for. Luckily it helped that her hair cut was pretty similar to the one I was wanting so we used hers as an example. She asked me lots of questions because she wanted to make sure the length and angle was what I really wanted and I'd much rather someone talk it out with me instead of just doing what they think I would want or doing what they think looks good. Of course I listened to her opinions and took some of her input as well, but she stayed within my guidelines on what I was for and against. As Heather put it she is very "anal" about the look and cut to which I replied "thank god for that because it's my hair and I need someone to be anal about it!"
So after an hour of her washing, cutting, blow drying and straighting it she only charged me $35 !!! Are you serious? Why yes I am. Her price was right up my alley. AND if that wasn't enough to entice me she told me I could walk back in there whenever she's available and she'd give me free bang trims...nobody I've gone to before has offered that to me. And believe me when I say that I need bang trims like fish need water. Love this girl so much. She transformed me from plain Jane to Austin hipster (at least my hair looks like it, but the rest of me is another story). I love my hair and can't wait to go back to her and maybe even have her do some color next time.

Let me start this by first saying that Donna is a friend of mine. Even so, however, I don't just let anyone cut my hair...friend or not. I've had a slew of bad experiences dating as far back as I can remember. Most notably being that the first 5-12 years of my life I was getting my haircut by a Barber that had seen both World Wars and knew only one haircut style: Butch. And don't forget the grease!
Fortunately, however, Donna knows what the hell she's doing with hair. There are unfortunately few ladies at salons that can give a decent guys hair cut, surprisingly. (Or that's what I've found, anyway.) Donna is certainly not one of those razor-happy biotches. I gave her a vague outline of what I wanted and she went to work...and lo and behold, I had exactly what I wanted in a very short period of time.
One thing that would have made my experience better is if Topaz had fresh coffee brewed. The stupid decanter was empty when I went for a cup...DENIED. But alas, I didn't come for coffee...I came for hair cutting.
Also I think it would be cool if there was a laser light show at Donna's station. But only because I felt compelled to put the word "laser" in this review.

I'm not a "salon-y" girl and I'm not very chatty, either, so I dread going to salons- because ironically, I'm worried about boring the stylist. This place was really clean, friendly and they happily talked amongst themselves and did not seem off-put by me being quiet. I'm sure if you are chatty, they would love that, too. And- I got a fantastic haircut, no lectures about dyeing my own hair (which is purple and blonde) and the price was really reasonable. Hipsters may scoff at the 'strip mall' location, but at least there is plenty of parking.

I've been getting my haircut from Kristin at Topaz for about 3 years now. She is consistently good. A little back ground. I don't have Brad Pitt's face, Matt McConaughey's body but I do have decent hair. Much of which can be attributed to a good cut every 5 or 6 weeks. I don't need a hip or trendy salon. I don't need a beer or wine or coffee. What I need is a good haircut on my schedule. I can usually get in the same week I call which is nice. She gives good head massage (better watch my terminology). And usually has a good story involving a bar fight (her) or falling down (her again). The bruises are good conversation starters and just remind me that I'm not as young and hip as I used to be. But hey, I still have pretty good hair.

I'll admit a little bias here in that I specifically tried Topaz today because yelper Donna R has moved her trade to this location, and it was primarily for that reason that I gave Topaz a shot today. That said, I'm glad that I did.
I've mentioned in other salon reviews that I'm a pretty poor planner when it comes to noticing that I need a haircut, and this can be a bit of a blessing and a curse: it's not until my haircut is exploding off of my head like some sort of follicle mushroom cloud that I know that I need to head in (pun intended), and usually immediately if not sooner. This means that it helps to find a spot where they'll take walk-ins, and as some joints that do don't offer higher end service, that can impede your desire to give those places a try.
That said, in Austin we're lucky to have several choices of walk-in hair cutting excellence, and my trip to Topaz was another example of how good we've got it here. And the cut? Just the way I like it, shorter than when I came in, a tad shaggy, and primed for a night out on the town.
Now if we could just get the rain to stop.

I was also referred to Donna, she is an amazing colorist! She does my sister's highlights and mine! I also don't feel like I'm being talked to by a hair dresser, she's totally normal and fun, she even visited us at the restaurant we told her that we worked at.
At first I was turned off by the strip mall look of things (it's just down from starbucks...) but if anything now I consider it a plus-- easy parking!

Donna is a rockstar. Not only did she get me in the same day I emailed her, but she gave me wine, and worked hard on my mess of hair. I have been going to the same stylist for so long that I forget when I switch it up and try someone new, that my hair is quite a pain in the a** to work on. She was such a perfectionist and I left with a style that made my hair look sleek and cool which was the exact opposite of what it looked like when I walked in.

See Donna. She listens and damn, can she style. The listening part is key, the gift of style equally key. She has both. Both!
I was so nervous about getting my hair cut I didn't notice much about Topaz the salon but remember thinking it was well appointed. I was about to go to a super important (to me) conference in nyc the *next day*. My hair was shagging out and I didn't feel my best. My regular stylist (Joey, Vain) was too booked to see me (my bad planning).
So it was Donna to the rescue. She worked me in that afternoon. She listened to the description of what I wanted and agreed to follow the lines of the original cut. Cool.
Drank two cold Bud Lites. Enjoyed some nice conversation (we Yelp together so of course Yelp came up). I like how she was neither too chatty or too distant. I loved that she put extra conditioner in my hair (because it "eats" conditioner) but didn't do that snobby stylist thing of lecturing me about my hair products or try sell me anything. Loved that.
And the cut? Terrific. And less expensive than my regular stylist.

I went to see Donna R. to get my hair chopped off. She was a breath of fresh air! At first I was nervous, for several reasons. One of which included the strip mall....but don't let it fool you, this salon is great inside!
Once inside, the receptionist was very nice and accommodating. She offered all types of beverages. Then, Donna came to retrieve me and got to work. She's a great stylist. She immediately made sure I was taken care of in the beverage department. Then, when I described what I wanted done, she wasn't apprehensive to take a lot of hair off.....which I greatly appreciate!
My hairstyle is great and very low maintenance. It takes me only 5 minutes and requires very little product, if any. She really listened to me when I told her I wanted something low maintenance and easy. She's very talented and easy to talk to, definitely check her out.

I'm trying to grow my hair out. But I knew it needs to be cleaned up. But I want it to be longer. But it's ragged on the ends.
It was about the time of "but it really needs to be cut" phase that Donna's post came through about finding new clients at Topaz. She had good reviews from other places, and Topaz had received good reviews as well.
I suppose this review needs to be two-fold.
First, the salon. It's much bigger inside than it looks. The front staff was very friendly. As I waited on the super comfy couches, I was tempted with mini muffins and a veggies platter with ranch dip. Drinks of all varieties were offered as well--mimosas, coffee, wine, cokes or whatever your palate may desire.
Second, my stylist--since she's the only one I actually had contact with. Donna was very friendly and listened to me about what I did and did not want. We talked a lot, but were also quiet a lot. It was the right amount for me, since sometimes I like to zone out, and other times i like to chit-chat.
I love how my hair came out. It's got color in it, but not too dramatic. It's cut, but not too short. I can't wait to show it off.
I've done color and cuts before, and although I got the "I know you from Yelp, first time" discount, the price was reasonable.
I'd go back to Donna and Topaz again.
Walk-ins welcome.
***UPDATE***
It's about time for a clean-up job on the hair. I thought that since a hair stylist I used to have told me to do the highlights (or dye or whatever) every 6 weeks, I thought I should do that now, too.
Enter Donna. She was surprised to see me so soon (heck, I got the time this week, figured I'd get it done). She told me it wasn't necessary to do the highlights. What?! You're not going to use this opportunity to get more money out of me?!
That's why I give Donna more props (or in Yelp's case, more stars). She was honest and told me all I really needed was a trim--if that.
Yay. Thanks, Donna.

I walked into Topaz, and there was a 15 min. wait for the next available hair stylist, who turned out to be Megan. She's a cool person. We talked about good music and she helped me decide how I wanted my hair. I asked for bangs, but since it was my first time in a while to manage bangs, she suggested short layers, like side bangs, yet easy to grow out if I didn't like it. She gave me an amazing head massage & shampoo; I think they use Bumble & Bumble. It had been a long time since I got my hair done at a nice place, and after she had used the products and styled my hair, it looked and felt and smelled fantastic. She only charged $45 for the entire service, which is a great price for the quality, and I would definitely recommend Topaz Salon to anyone looking for a good haircut.

I am not one to write a review and never thought that I actually would but here goes....I have needed a good stylist for years and have never found one that I knew I would go back to but now that has all changed. After reading reviews on Yelp and settling on Topaz since it is in my neighborhood and has gotten great ratings I decided to call them and see if I could get an appointment for the same day (rare) and so I was set up with Tanya Steele. My hair was in DIRE need of a change and I expressed all of my concerns to her and she went to town. I LOVE my new cut! Tanya was super nice and honest about things like length, texture, etc. which I think more stylists should do. That IS their job after all :) This morning when I styled my hair I was surprised how easy it was, it looks great and you can tell it is a really good cut that won't grow out all wonky. In a couple of months when I need a new cut it won't be a question of who I will call....TANYA STEELE at Topaz...she rocks!
I have felt so pretty all day long and it's because I started my day getting a cut/color with Lynn. The way she cut and styled it looks camera ready but not sprayed solid...it looks very light and bouncy and I just love it. Lynn's been cutting my hair for probably a year now...I'd been coloring it myself forever. Then I got, well, old. And my hair got really old looking. It was frizzing and not soft like it used to be. Lynn told me it was because of the cheapo chemicals in the store-bought coloring pkgs. I'm such a cynical former New Yorker and didn't really buy into that but one month I had some extra change and decided to test out her theory.
Oh.
My.
Gawd.
I would never have believed that it would make such a difference but my hair looks as good as any twenty-year old's and I'm plenty older than that so I am psyched.
The salon very strip-mall-y on the exterior despite trying their hardest to overcome it...but I used to go to Pink and their interior really stank so if you ask me, I'd rather go into the strip mall and spend 2 hrs in a nicer environment.
Incidentally, Lynn is my favorite type of stylist...she'll chat if you want to chat but if you want to zone out or even doze, you don't have to worry about her yacking on and on about crap like my last stylist did at Pink. I lost over 70 lbs during the course of the time I used that stylist's services and not one time did she notice or say anything...yet I was supposed to sit there in the chair and hear every excrutiating detail about her life. Bored me right off of her client list. It may seem like a weird thing to comment on in a review but it's definitely important to me that my stylist lets me sit there and relax...Lynn has that down to a science.

Donna at Topaz was referred by a friend. I had doubts seeing as I had gone for 10 years with bad hair due to the fact that many stylists don't know how to cut curly hair (or choose to force straight blow outs on me). I had tried expensive salons all over Los Angeles before I moved here and Donna has been the ONLY ONE able to cut my hair perfectly for a very reasonable price. Great cuts, great salon, great prices, great customer service!

Located off Oltorf next to the Starbucks and Slick Willy's, Topaz Salon is a great place for a guy or gal to get a bit of style for around $40 or $50, depending on who's doing your 'do. They cut and color, and give manis and pedis too.
Passing your wait time in their sunny sitting area is made more pleasant by a comfy couch and a range of free beverages including coffee, tea, water and wine. Proximity to magazines and the product shelves provides further distraction while you wait - even though most patrons I've seen are under the scissors, not lounging on the couch.
As for the stylists themselves- I went through two before I met Jaime on a walk-in one day. Cute and cheeful, Jaime is the only stylist I've met that did exactly what I wanted to my hair. I didn't even have a photo. She was friendly and conversational during the cut, and didn't once try to push product- just told me what she was using and why. All my friends loved the new 'do, and I've been back to see her regulary ever since.
As of this writing... I did find out they are now closed on Sundays. Boo.
