After a few excellent meals at its sibling restaurant, Epic, I was dying to try Waterbar, so I hosted a colleague for a weeknight dinner there.  She enjoyed the Rock Cod Colbert, which is a complete showstopper.  I ordered the finely prepared halibut but was distracted by the accompanying vegetables, which were very over salted.

We concluded the meal with the warm chocolate pudding cake, which was absolutely phenomenal - seriously.  Like Epic, the service is outstanding, warm and absent pretense.  And the interior and view are both impressive.

First off, the ambiance is spectacular! The view is beautiful with a great view of the Bay Bridge. The customer service was sooooo nice! The waitress will take your order and bring you drinks and everything, but some of the cooks personally bring out the dish for you and explain exactly what it is. They keep your table clean quite often and keep your glass of water filled.

The food is delicious. I ordered the 1lb fish (forgot what kind of fish it was). They cook is just right. For appetizer, we had baked oysters with spinach and bacon. And for dessert, I had raspberry cheesecake and my girlfriend had warm chocolate pudding covered with a brownie and mint ice cream.

All in all, definitely a great restaurant to try out, but not for a casual dinner or anything (unless you're made of money). Me and my gf went for our 2 year anniversary dinner. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars is because the price (depending on what you order) isn't all that cheap. For the 2 of us, our bill came out to be about $130 (excluding tip).

Last time I went with Phil and we had a great time at the bar there. I enjoy the view of the BayBridge, the high ceiling and brick building suit my tastes. the oysters were very good and the wines we ordered were all good. It is pricey (like the $18 a glass Pomerol, that was a bit crazy) but the quality worth it.

A beautiful space, atmosphere, and location.  Great (no, perhaps even perfect) service.

However, the food, while very good, made me walk away thinking that for the same price I could have eaten at Michael Mina or Aqua, and had really outstanding food.  So, other than checking out the view and giving this place its chance, it is hard to see myself going back (unless I had an out of town guest who might be more impressed by view than food).

To be specific, the ceviches were far too one-dimensional and the mackerel tartare had none of the fishy intensity that one normally associates with raw mackerel.  It was a real let-down.  The whole petrale sole was great.  The olive oil cake had a texture more like dry bread than any sort of cake, and certainly nothing like the moist, dense cake that is implied in the concept.

Went back last friday night and sat outside on second floor patio.  It was such a nice evening.   And you really can't beat the view...

I had the Rock Cod Colbert which is fantastic, but was about ten bucks more than when I last tried it.   The 4% surcharge that this place instituted when it first opened which was discontinued is definitely reflected in the price of its entrees.  It's probably more like 10% or maybe $10 more per entree...

The bottom line is Waterbar is too f*cking expensive for what it is...

San Francisco at its best.

With the glow of the Bay Bridge lights and the sweeping views of the bay, it's easy to see how one could truly leave their heart in San Francisco.

Last night, I came here for a special occasion for my grandmother, and we were seated in a beautiful cove looking directly into the SF Bay. With 2 aquariums towering over us on either end, the setting was breathtaking.

My grandmother's eyes were enlightened. She was excited and I was excited for her.

We started off with a round of oysters, lobster chowder and the sea urchin and see bass ceviche. Every single mouthful was incredible. The chowder was tame and not over bearing, while the ceviche left you with a fabulous taste of the sea.

I personally loved the ceviche. It was fresh, seasoned well, and was paired well with the wine we were having. The sommelier was incredibly friendly, outgoing, and truly gave us a brilliant recommendation. (You need that when the wine list reminds you of a medical dictionary)

I ended up having the petrale sole, while others had the Fish 'Colbert', the Cioppino, and the Wild Striped Bass. I was able to have a bit of each, and none disappointed. I've never seen Fish and Chips served the way it was here, 'Colbert', and it was not only stunning on the plate, but with the surrounding cole slaw, made it into a distinct fan favorite.

Our service was top notch and I personally appreciated the timed patience and knowledge of our server. He was fantastic, and capped what was from the beginning, a meal to remember.

San Francisco has its charm. An old, romantic, charm. When you walk out of Waterbar and are inundated with the panoramic view of the Bridge and Bay, you are easily reminded to swallow the "lucky" pill.

Bravo, Waterbar. You are well on your way to establishing yourself as a San Francisco landmark.

By the way, 6 months later and this place is still amazing! Eugy took me and a few others here to celebrate my birthday last month and every single thing that we ordered was simply amazing.

And a big shout out to Jen, our lovely sommelier. She was sweet, warm and great at recommending wines. We loved both of them!!

And thanks Eugy for another great evening. Love you!

I have been to Waterbar several times before for drinks, and absolutely loved the ambiance in the bar area. Based on this initial impression, I decided to try it today for lunch, and must say I was extremely disappointed with my experience.

The service was fine, the food was OK, but the only thing that made the $70 price tag worth it was the view (the same view I could have had sitting on a bench on Embarcadero and eating a sandwich).

I'll come back for drinks, but unless someone else is footing the bill, I don't plan on coming back to dine.

Expensive, yes! but the view, priceless!
I love this place, the view along with a great conversation and the open patio makes me very happy. I have only order appetizers and cocktails and I have enjoy them so far, I have never order dinner.
I still give it five stars because of the ambiance, the view! and the great staff.

The best feature of this restaurant is the location. It seems like a pretty solid happy hour spot especially on a beautiful day. We went for dinner however. It wasn't bad but it wasn't that memorable either. The oysters were decent, my lobster was ok and everyone else seemed content with their meal. The alcohol was by far the best thing at the table though (and the company). So... I'd likely come  back and sit at the bar but not sure if I'd sit through another dinner here. There are just too many good seafood places in sf.

Halibut Sashimi was off the chain. My impression was one of wow- this defines melts in your mouth. Whole seabass for the main course with a chinese style sauce, deboned and plated by our server, all of which have some major skills!,  As we approach the final weeks of summer I would suggest hanging out on the patio to take in the breeze with a beverage and some snacks... the service is on point, great food knowledge and personality. Expect to drop 50-80/person (before tip) depending on your appetite for destruction.

Waterbar offers a superb dining experience. We were welcomed well for a Saturday lunch, even with folding bicycles. With previously obtained permission, we brought them in and folded them. They stored them for us. We asked for and received a window seat. A perfect framing of the Bay Bridge.

Sparkling water is complementary. We were surprised at the extent and quality of the appetizers, lunch and desert items. We had excellently fresh British Columbia oysters; corn and lobster soup, Pacific squid with white beans (excellently prepared) in a superb sauce, and Mahi mahi. Ordinarily, we wouldn't have chosen a  Mahi entree, as it's so common on the menu, but it was recommended by Tobias (our waiter) as a guest favorite, and we definitely agreed with him. Each bite was a treat.

Tobias' service was exceptionally good. He knows the wine list and offers great insight into the menu and why those items were chosen for Waterbar's guests. Ask for him!

This was our second dining pleasure at Waterbar (the first one was dinner, and both were w o n d e r f u l! We'll be back soon. Question is, for lunch or dinner? Both were different and excellent.

Overpriced, staff needs more knowledge about the food they serve. But, the architecture is incredible and the view is to die for. artichoke crap dip is fantastic, good selection of oysters. Outdoor seating facing the bay (and 10 feet from the water?) You can't go wrong. This is totally where I would have like my wedding reception or a super swank par-tay. The towering salt-water aquariums made me fall in love. Oysters on the afternoon menu are $2.75 a pop. Wine menu is tremendous.

The Waterbar is a great place to impress a date. It is located on the waterfront in between the Bay Bridge and the piers in what looks like a fake warehouse. At the bar you can enjoy fine views on the bridge and a little part of the bay. The oysters were quite forgetful, but the the mussels were as good as anywhere in Belgium, and the crab was grilled to perfection. Add a good wine selection, and you will leave with a smile on your face (and a hole in your wallet).

Here's a case of me loving everything I had, and my husband not quite wowed with all his choices.

I had the sweet corn and lobster chowder.  Not quite a chowder though.  It was more like a broth.  Heavy in lobster flavor and little kernels of sweet corn for that delightful crunch.   Delish.  Hubby had Emma's Favorite Salad.  Chopped endive with fresh apples and Gouda cheese.  Both of us thought this was refreshing and enjoyed it.

For dinner, I had the Rock Cod Colbert.  Basically a very fancy fish and chips dish.  I can't even really describe it - so, check out the picture (on the Waterbar Yelp page).  The fish is filleted and some how put back together and then deep fried whole.  It's quite amazing.  Comes with fries.  I ate everything - including the eyes and cheeks (hey, I'm Chinese - nothing on a fish goes wasted).

My husband didn't feel very sea foodie today, so he ordered the steak.  Yes, you take a chance order non-fish at a seafood restaurant.  Not the best NY steak in the world.  It was well done on some parts and the others it was rare.  He wasn't crazy about the vegetables (basically another small salad) or the hash 'thing' that came with it.  Too bad - I guess if you have something on the menu that is not the specialty of the restaurant, you still should know how to prepare it.

For dessert, we shared the coconut panna cotta.  SO GOOD!   Dreamy, creamy panna cotta with a hint of coconut, smothered with a thick blueberry sauce (with whole blueberries in it) and what tasted like candies coconut sprinkled on top.  Wonderful.  Perfect for me.  Not quite sweet enough for my husband.

Ah well, like I said, half of the table was happy with all of her meal.  The other half, left full, but not totally satisfied.  Four stars from me.  Three from my hubby.

I've been here once before and thought it was overated, but thought I would try it again. I'm glad I did.

what we had:

Baked oysters in spinach and bacon - YUMMY, but I guess anything with bacon HAS to be good.

Lobster corn chowder: It was okay- very watery, you get bored of it and start feeling bloated.

Shrimp Cocktail: the shrimp was HUGE and made perfectly!

Pressed Lobster: I was curious to see why this dish was twice as much as any other item on the menu ($64). When I got it, it was good... I don't know about $64 dollars good because I finished it in 5 mins and was still hungry but the flavor was unique and the lobster was prepared to perfection.

Whole crab: oven roasted. there was a smokey taste to the crab meat which made it very good. It does make the crab harder to eat because the shell kind of cracked and crumbled into the meat but I did find it more interesting than the steamed one I tried last time. They will offer you the crab with a choice of 3 preparations - make sure you choose this one. if you want it any other way,  go to fishermans warf and get it for 1/4 the price.

the resturaunt itself is very nice. Spectacular view of the water and the bay bridge.

Overhyped, overpriced.  I was expecting a lot, perhaps too much.
The bar area inside is tiny.  The giant pillar-like fish tanks were yellow and had grime all over them-- not exactly appetizing to look at.

The crowd wasn't exactly FiDi.  or SF.  Seemed Bridge and Tunnel.  Yeah, very B&T.

But the bowl of fries sure rocked.

Worth checking out, but not coming back.

A buddy of mine went to this place to check out this place on Saturday.  The bar looked nice so we decided to eat there.  They had their seafood station at the bar...........great idea.

Fantastic View of the bay bridge and treasure island.
Expensive
3.75 per oyster .........very good.  great selection
martinis were expensive and they have the smallest martini glasses I have ever seen.
lobster roll was good ..........just too foo foo but had to try it.

There was a birthday party upstairs and the husband gave the wife the first electric sports car.  That was pretty cool.  They drove the car right in front of the restaurant.  Didn't have dinner..............just drinks and appetizers.

If you want to impress a date...........this is the place to be.  Be prepared to spend a pretty penny.

The food is pretty good, albeit over priced, but you are paying more for the location, view and gigantic fish tanks--which I found slightly ironic as I nibbled on my Tai Snapper and watched the beautiful fish swim serenely and unsuspectingly by.

We ordered crab that turned out to be incredibly over salted, for me this means either it was old and they were trying to cover it up or the chef was a bit too heavy with the hand when seasoning. We simply pushed it aside and set about devouring the other 6 dishes the three of us had ordered to share. Our waiter felt horrible that we were not 100% satisfied and insisted on comping us for the dish as well as dessert.

The crowd tends to be a bit on the "blouses, blazers and balding" side but it is definitely a good place to take out of town friends or relatives for the location alone. Next time I would skip dinner and just get drinks and appetizers in the bar.

Delicious, light fare.  Great views on a clear day of the bay bridge, boats and characters along the Embarc.  For me there is nothing better on a warm day than sitting out on their porch with some friends watching the world go by with a bottle of wine.

The salads, crab, oysters, desserts (and pretzels) are all delicious.  The wine selction is great, although it is better to just order a bottle if you plan on having 2 or more drinks.  I have not been able to leave this place without spending a few hundred dollars for 2-4 people.

I have to say not a great, but not a bad experience at Waterbar.  The meal was fine, drinks were good and had great company which is really half of it in my book  but,
Yes, it is crowded and if you haven't made a reservation in advance forget about it!
Service can be slow but again with the right company not generally a problem unless your either there with family in town or children neither of which you should take to Waterbar.
So I had a good but not great dining experience and would go back to try it again.

Have been a fan of Epic next door, I only come here for 'lunner' (after lunch time & before dinner time). Especially when it has such a beautiful panoramic view of the ocean & the Bay Bridge!

Sitting out door on a sunny afternoon with your bestfriend, having lobster rolls & mussels stew over a glass of Pinot Grigio, checking out those hot joggers, chatting about the party we went last night & planning our vacas; it can't get any better than that!

My fav dishes here are:

Lobster Roll - serve with fresh lobster tail in a 6" soft bread, butter, with cabbage citrus salad, & zucchini tempura on the side. (They do change the side dish) $25.

Mussels stew - serve in broth with fresh ripe dice tomato, garlic, shallot, leak, & a touch of white wine.  It has about 25pcs of smaller size mussels. The tasty broth that is so good for dipping bread. $15

Oyster Onion soup - So rich in flavor & really tasty! $9

Pommes fried - so yummy, they fried it in a lighter veggies oils - $5

& the best of all all, they have all the hottest looking  waitress there!

Another beautiful location from Mr. Kuleto.  The venue itself is amazing, but the food was just ok.  For the price, it's not really a true value.  But, if you've got a fat, corporate expense report it's a great place to spend someone else's money!  The views are amazing...I can't believe he got a permit to dig up that small park and put in both Waterbar & Epic.

We need more places with a view of our gorgeous Bay and bridges...

Pro's:
- Amazing food, well-prepared and unique: had the dungeness crab BLT which will set you free - so good.  My dining companions had the fried shrimp and the watermelon salad plus the seafood corn chowder and they raved.
- Views, not to be missed; especially from the patio on a warm sunny day.  Built-in heaters installed in the umbrellas - very cool.
- Interior - beautifully designed place.

Con's:
- Pricey - lunch for three on a Sunday with drinks was well over $200
- Spacey staff - our waiter and host both seemed either hungover or severely strung out. Speaking veerrrryy sllloooowwwllly... Wow.

Overall, a great addition to the SF dining scene.  Difficult to get into - must book dinners weeks ahead via OpenTable.com.  Lunch is more accessible.

because of its proximity to the tourist traps along the embarcadero, the waterbar is not the kind of restaurant that i would typically frequent for a saturday lunch, but it pleases me to say that i am sometimes too quick to judge a book by its cover, and here my first impression proved to be off the mark.

granted, the restaurant's décor is a bit gaudy and there's definitely a sense that the tables turnover fairly quickly.

the menu might best be described as all-american seafood bistro.

still, we enjoyed a very interesting rëinterpretation of the new england lobster roll: the lobster was marinated in lime and served chilled with warm tempura battered pickles and a mexican version of cole slaw. we were served a thought-provoking watermelon salad (with watercress and a reduction made from balsamic vinegar) that was perfect on a warm summer afternoon.

i'd come back. expectations would be modest, but i'd be willing to give waterbar another try.

It's expensive, but the food is delicious and the wait staff is extremely attentive and personable. I forgot what kind of fish I had, but it just melted in my mouth.  The oysters were fresh and FAT. Yuuum!!  I do have to admit that thelobster salad was on the puny side for the price.  On a clear day, you get a lovely view of the Bay and all the kooky characters roaming the Embarcadero. Decor is unique, but relaxing.  A great spot for a romantic dinner or to impress someone.

Consistently one of the most booked restaurants on OpenTable since it opened, Waterbar boasts fresh seafood and a panoramic view of the Bay Bridge. We came here for lunch and unfortunately it was too cold to sit outside. As you walk in, you see a bar to the left stacked with oysters, clams, lobsters, etc. In the center of the dining room, there is an aquarium filled with various kinds of fish, including one giant eel. We were seated in the back room, so we also passed by tanks of live lobsters, crabs, etc. All that display of seafood sure made me hungry!

The three of us shared a couple appetizers - the tuna paillard and a fried oyster special. The tuna paillard was very tender and lightly seasoned with a vinaigrette sauce. The fried oyster was lightly battered and rested on a bed of smoked cod (? - couldn't quite tell what type of fish it was...) It was accompanied by a mustard sauce and garnished with sliced olives. The flavors worked well together with each other.

As for entree, two of us got the lobster roll and our companion got the grilled sea scallops. There was a healthy helping of lobster on toasted bread, and the entree was accompanied by celery root remoulade. The lobster was very tender and the best part was that the dish came with melted butter for dipping. However, I would have to say that the lobster club at Asia de Cuba was better. Maybe it's a bit of an unfair comparison though since the lobster club at Asia de Cuba had bacon in it, and you can never beat bacon!

Even though we were pretty full, we of course went ahead and shared two desserts. We got the Brownie Brown Sugar Parfait, which was a heavenly mix of chewy brownie bites with cream and gooey caramel sauce. It was absolutely delicious and we thought it couldn't be topped... until we tasted the Warm Chocolate Pudding Cake with coffee ice cream. The combination was decadent and offered the perfect ending to the meal. All in all, the meal was great, especially the desserts, albeit quite pricey for lunch. It's a nice splurge every once in a while (or if someone else is footing the bill :-) and definitely sit outside for the view.

Last night, I attended a concierge cocktail party at Waterbar. I've been meaning to visit this hip new restaurant on Embarcadero for sometime now. So the invitation for complimentary cocktails and hors 'doeuvres definitely swayed my decision to get their quicker! And I'm so glad I came. This restaurant is STUNNING. They definitely didn't skimp out on location or decor here. And oh man....the views of the Bay Bridge from the upper terrace were amazing!!!!!!! Everytime I visit a place like this, it makes me appreciate the city I live in more and more.

Ernesto and I had a glass of chardonnay each, while mingling with the other concierge of the city. The friendly servers passed around tiny but delicious bite-size appetizers. I was starving so this was all a tease to me. Nevertheless, everything was great. I will definitely be back to have dinner here with someone special.

Yes it's a pretty place with pretty people but if you go at 5:30pm on a Sunday, the people aren't so pretty.  It's the geriatric tourist crowd - ugh!   But you can get a table with a nice view and the food, albeit really expensive, was simple and pretty good.  Service was excellent too.   I don't think I need to go back again unless I'm on someone else's dime.  Neat and scary fish in the big fishtanks too.

The view on a clear sunny summer day is fabulous. Sitting outside with your friends sipping wine on said clear sunny summer day also fabulous. But the $20 salads and sandwiches....could have been better. Eh, maybe I'm jaded because I lived on a backpacker's budget for the last several months and discovered you can eat like a king in many parts of the world for less than $10 (sometimes less than $2!), or maybe the slump in the economy has me counting my pennies, but lately I'm just a bit wary and annoyed by the prices at some SF restaurants, in relation to the amount and/or quality of food they serve you.

I'd recommend Waterbar for pre-brunch or post-brunch drinks or happy hour, but not so much for the food.

If I'm going to pay $15 for a cheese plate, I sure as hell better get more than 3 small ass pieces of cheese.

What the hell?

So it's pretty, with pretty people and in a pretty location... but we're in a recession dammit!

It is unfortunate that all I can think about is the strand of black hair that fell out of our cobb chicken salad.  The service was decent but they seemed a bit inexperienced.  The raw oysters (we chose two from Massachussetts, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) were not spectactular, although we may be spoiled by California oysters??  We also ordered the grilled squid with butter beans - this dish was unique and delicious!  The cobb salad tasted good - yes they did replace it, although I could not commit 100% after experiencing the black hair.  Nice ambiance, very pleasant on the patio on a weekend afternoon

Walked into Waterbar on a late Saturday evening, knowing we're not going to get a table for hours.  Decided to sit at the bar and wait for a table, the ambiance at the bar was great.

Started looking at the wine list, and they had a nice selection.  Ordered a bottle of  Peter Michael "Cuvée Indigene" ($300).  The sommelier came over into the bar, and immediately asked to have us seated :)

10 minutes later...Sat down, opened a great bottle of wine, and started to look at the menu.  I was not to impressed, but I ordered the seared halibut which was quite tasty.  I would have rather gone to Gary Danko's my normal hangout.

I went to have a glass of wine at the bar to check out the place. Yes the place is cool but seriously man, they need to have a better range of reds - the least expensive wine by the glass was $20  which is inappropriate & excessive. It was also impossible to get a bill from the server; i actually thought about just leaving a wad of cash with the manager but he was MIA also.

All in all, the place is cool but not really interested in making a reservation for dinner after my look-see.

Excellent location and ambience.  The food was just OK and very pricey.  They needs some dishes that really make you go hmmmmmm.  So far, the only thing mouthwatering is their drinks and french fries.

Not a fan.  Bf and I took an out-of-friend here b/c it has an amazing view - particularly during the summer at sunset...  And the view was amazing, but everything else was lacking.

We didn't make reservations (our fault) and waited by the bar for about 45mins-1hr for a table on the patio.  Service at the bar was mediocre unless you were flaunting lots of leg or cleavage.  Patio seating was great, but that night (maybe we were unlucky) most of the heat lamps were broken (and anyone in the bay area knows that as warm as it is during the day, a heat lamp is a must for the evening).  Bf and I ordered some oysters for an appetizer (we're at waterbar, their specialty is fresh seafood, yes?)  But we didn't get our apps til after our entrees - so our oysters got comped.  Sounds great, but the next day, bf came down with FOOD POISONING - most likely from the oysters.

For entrees: Bf got some fish with bacon and it was good, our friend got a steak, it was good...  I got  a lobster bisque - too salty.  I also got a seared ahi with foie gras appetizer - and I've had way better.  Foie was def undercooked - it still had the texture of a gland - kinda cool and slimy...  Definite turn-off.  And then with the ahi - I got some really awful pieces - kinda tough and I'm pretty sure they gave me pieces with some of the blood-line in there.  Sinewy and tough...  And the sauce they poured on top wasn't even all that great - it was like a light soy/miso, but it has a fishy taste and was actually too mild (although if they had done the ahi right, a mild sauce would've been right).

Will not return.

View restaurants are always tricky - there is always some adjustment to the price / food ratio I would expect.  Then, there is always the risk of a table with a poor view.  3 of us walked in with no reservations at 7:15, and good a medium-good table.  I was pleasantly surprised (not astounded) with the food, and our medium good view was still pretty terrific.  Amazing views from next to the foot of the Bay Bridge.

The raw bar was nice, but not outstanding.  Nicoise roll was a nice surprise, not amazing, but nice.  Corn and lobster chowder was great - although, I am easily seduced by the inclusion of bacon.

For the main course, we got a whole fish - terrific, especially with the judiciously applied spicy black bean sauce was a terrific pairing - distinct without being overpowering.  The sides were also quite good.  Escarole was still crisp, baby carrots were simple and delicious, and the spoon bread bordered on decadent without being a greasy mess.

The caramel in the chocalate mousse was outstanding.

The wine list was nicely varied by region, price and varietal, without being overwhelming.

Service was very good - attentive, helpful and informative without being obtrusive.

I found the restaurant to be disappointing.  Similar to Epic (although Epic is a bit better), the atmosphere is great, and the food looks very pretty, but ultimately doesn't deliver the type of quality meal that you would expect for the price.  My soup was too salty, the soft shell crab had too much dressing on it, etc. Go to Boulevard down the street instead.

I think the location of the restaurant is great since it is on the water and it has an outside deck. Try and go when it's not too foggy and cold outside. I thought the appetizers were pricey and the portions were tiny. I was satisfied with my main course but I thought it was a little on the salty side. Also the service was OK. The waiter was very attentive towards the beginning, but it took forever to get his attention for our check.
