Up north, T&S is great for dim sum, seafood, and they're also open until early morning. Salt and pepper shrimp is awesome.
Din Ho is popular but always a little greasy for me, they have Chinese BBQ, ducks, etc. though.
Down south Marco Polo is a good choice. I've only been there for Dim Sum though.
I'd also heard good things about Mandarin house, though I never went.

If you want American style Chinese -- Chinatown on MoPac by Spicewood Springs. Otherwise, T&S and Din Ho are my votes, too. Suzi's if you like a fancier setting.

Suzi's more fancy than Chinatown? I think they are comparable. I really like both. I'm not sure if these are chains and have a couple of asian cuisines, but Noodlism downtown is good, and Firebowl at the arboretum and RR are also good.

Asian Market Cafe at Spicewood Springs/183 (in the back of the Asian Market in the shopping center with Sambets) is far and away the best Chinese food in town.

Suzi's on shoal creek at anderson was recently remodeled and is more "Fancy" then chinatown and the other buffet places. Suzi's does not have a buffet at all. The service is really good. Ask to sit in Mark's section and he will take care of you. No sushi on Sundays. Enjoy!

If you live down south, try Ng House off Westgate and William Cannon. It is delightful and also reasonably priced. I highly recommend the house lo mien.

Coming from four years in the Northeast, the Chinese selection down here is wanting. However, we've had a lot of luck with New Mandarin Chinese Restaurant on Oltorf St. Their food is always hot and plentiful and they deliver quickly if you're in the area. Unfortunately, their delivery range is limited, so you may have to go to the restaurant and sit down. Their prices are very good - you can get dinner combos which include soup, egg rolls, rice and a Chinese donut for around $7. Their website is
www.luvtofu.com (it's kind of crazy). Also, they have two numbers that are constantly busy. Keep trying.

i don't think the Chinese population is as entrepreneurial at least when it comes to restaurants in Austin; for that you'll have to make a trek to Houston or Dallas - most of the Vietnamese places in town serve Chinese dishes and the Chinese American dishes (think Chow Mein/Lo Mein and Sweet and Sour Pork). For more Chinese flare - people say mandarin house, pao's in lakeway, T&S on Lamar, din ho off research, and marco polo off (I-35 - they also serve Malaysian dishes as well). Coco's cafe (the one near dino ho and the one near UT) both serve a few Taiwanese dishes. First Chinese BBQ (Austin Chinatown Center)is also a place to try.

I must heartily second Carter B.'s vote for Asia Market's cafe (in the back of the supermarket). Though it is a bit of a drive from Central Austin, it sure is worth it for the Ma Po Tofu (spicy, non-vegetarian tofu dish), the Chinese eggplant (also non-vegetarian), and the Szechwan-style duck (definitely non-vegetarian). It's the only Chinese restaurant I go to nowadays, and I've tried many of them in Austin.
If you love authentic beef noodle soup and you don't want to drive all the way up 183 to Spicewood Springs to visit Asia Cafe, then check out Yen Ching Noodle House on 29th and Guadalupe. Them's some tasty, spicy noodles. My mom always asks me to take her there whenever she's visiting from Dallas. And mind you, my parents have strict standards for the Chinese restaurants that they will actually frequent (which is most likely where I get it from).
