So, I live in Allston and there are an abundance of cheap and used furniture stores, but which ones would you guys recommend? I am hoping to balance style and price with a little durability. Any suggestions?

I bought most of my stuff from City Scheme in Cambridge. Their service wasn't the greatest -a bit snobby- but they have cool stuff for suprisingly low prices. I scored an awesome looking Italian blue couch and ottoman for $1200 (on sale). Also the fabric has been amazing, impossible to stain it!

Also I bought a kitchen table and chairs from a place I found on the internet:

They are pretty similar to City Scheme. I had no trouble with the shipping either. For $400 I had a great looking kitchen table and 4 designer knock off chairs. Still looks cool in my place.

Hope this helps - J

You may have already tried this - but have you checked craig's list?  I have yet to buy furniture from the listings, but know many that have.

I've been checking Craig's List almost religiously, but without a car, it could be a problem transporting the furniture to my apartment. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Well there is always U-Haul. It is actually pretty cheap and easy to get a truck, but you'll need some burly friends :)

I don't know if it's still as cheap, but last summer I rented an enterprise cargo van to haul some of my furniture around--the price was so low it was almost a joke, and it was definetly easier to drive than a U-Haul...just another idea, if you're going the craigslist route.

I definitely recommend going the craigslist route.  I got a spectacular couch for $200.  I also found a guy on craigslist who moved it for me for $80.

Target has cheap and stylist furniture. There is one in Watertown, which is 10 minutes away from Allston. If driving is an issue, go to Target.com and order.

There's a little antique/secondhand joint in Cambridge called Organic Furniture. Opens again after labor day.

Another option, if you aren't in a hurry (you order and wait up to 16 weeks) is Urban Renewal.  It is in South Boston and what they specialize in is 'knocking-off' styles from Crate and Barrell and Pottery Barn etc.  You get the same pieces for up to 50% off and they have floor sample sales as well.

Try Putnam furniture on Mass Ave around Central Square. They do decent ex-rental stuff and can deliver reasonably cheap too
