what's good folks.  a handful of friends and i just arrived in SD last night and we we're wondering what's up with the nightlife.  we're all Bay Area natives and trying to see if San Diego does it proper with the Hip-Hop/Soul/Funk - not exactly looking for live shows at this point, just a spot to lounge and dance a bit.  preferably a spot that doesn't play too much of the top 40 radio junk....but....any recommendations will do. Thanks in advanced yelpers!

The Belly Up in Solana Beach has good shows and DJs.  Most of the places in the Gaslamp have a hiphop room, but none of them are that great.  Off the top of my head, I can think of Blue Tattoo and Aubergine, but then again it's been a while since I've been back to SD.  www.climaxsd.com puts on pretty good events; younger crowd, excessively crowded, and they usually they spin hiphop.
